Commentary

Jeff Moon (岳雄飞) comments frequently about US-China trade and economic affairs on television and in the newspapers.

He critiqued the recommendations of the U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party in this March 22, 2024 commentary in The Hill.com.

He discussed prospects for the November 15, 2023 Biden-Xi summit meeting in San Francisco (CNBC 11/13/23) and observed after the meeting that announcements of new bilateral cooperation simply resumed limited aspects of activities already under way before Xi took power (TheHill.com 11/16/23).

He explained the implications of President Biden’s August 9, 2023 outbound investment Executive Order on Chinese CGTN TV (comments begin at 3:00 in clip). He also described China’s policy options for responding to the current real estate crisis in this 8/31/23 interview on Chinese CGTN TV (comments begin at 1:40 in clip). In prior interviews on CNBC, he described the unique causes of China’s real estate problems, why Taiwan is the most sensitive issue in US-China relations, and the reasons for China’s tech sector regulatory crackdown.

Here is an informal 2023 interview discussing practical experience conducting government relations with China over three decades as a White House and State Department official, foreign business executive, and consultant.  Topics include historical ups and downs; the nature and functions of the Communist Party; geopolitical factors; emerging trade issues and tech rivalry; Chinese business etiquette and protocol; U.S. business community influence; Taiwan; military-to-military relations; the China-Russia relationship; the impact of upcoming U.S. elections; China’s faltering economy; and future prospects.
